Nord-Lenangen - History

Nord-Lenangen is a small fjord village outermost in Lyngen municipality. It is a sunny place with about 500-600 inhabitants. Nord-Lenangen is like an arm shooting in through Ullsfjorden and attaching itself to Lyngenhalvøya in between high mountain tops. The taller tops are about 1200 meters high. Nord-Lenangen is situated at the utmost part of the Lyngen peninsula. .

Formerly the village was almost isolated due to the lack of bridge and road connections between the eastern- and the western part of the Nord-Lenangen fjord. In 1962 the construction of the county road started, all the way from Lenangsøya to Russelv in Nord-Lenangen. The road was completed in 1970. At the same time as the construction work was over the local boats stopped coming.

Nord-Lenangen belonged to Karlsøy municipality until 1964 when it was moved to Lyngen municipality. Buses were used to transport people to and from Lyngseidet because the municipality administration was moved from Karlsøy to Lyngen municipality.

During World War two Finnmark and parts of Nord-Troms were burned, Lenangen was not burned. The burning stopped at Lyngstuva which is the utmost and the northernmost point in Nord-Lenangen.

The germans set up cannon stances in Russelv, which is an exciting sight for visitors these days.

The inhabitants in Nord-Lenangen lived by fishing and holdings. In 1948 the first prawn boat from Lenangen started trawling for shrimps. The locals were both excited and skeptical. The prawn trawling was a success and very profitable for the village. In 1963 they started a shrimp factory and it stayed the largest factory in the village until 2007 when the factory was closed because it was no longer profitable.

In 1978 the villagers started a subscription in aid of building a congregational house, and in the end of the 1980s it was done in the form of a church.

Nord-Lenangen also has its own sports team called Lyngstuva IL, and they have got their own football team and clubhouse.

The retirement centre was done in about year 1985.

Now, in 2008 the village has still got its own fire department, elementary school, two grocery shops, a flower shop with all kinds of funny items in addition to flowers.

There are also other places of work such as fishermen's shacks and fishing boats in all sizes.
